Another wet day greeted the weather-weary District 23 riders, but the mud didn’t seem to slow down Collin Hagen, as he won three of the biggest classes of the day, 250 C, Open C, and 14-24 C. Nearly 200 riders braved constant rain to participate in the first race of the year at Elko Motocross.

This year, the Motokazie Delaer Series has expanded to three tracks. Besides the mainstays of Elko and Mankato, the series now runs at Midway Motocross Park, located in the southeastern corner of Minnesota. The owners of that track are taking a year off to attend to other matters, leaving the track in the capable hands of Motokazie.

So far this year, Sunday precipitation has been the constant. The first event at Midway was snowed out. The next event there saw rain all day on Sunday, leading to a muddy and shortened day. At Elko, after a beautiful week of sunny warm weather, the storm clouds headed in on Sunday morning and it rained in varying degrees for the rest of the day. They were able to get the first set of motos in, but much to the relief of all the mechanics and most of the riders, they decided to call off the second set.

Knowing the track would get worse as the day went on, the first race of the day was called to the line as soon as possible. The second race of the day, 250 C, was the first race for Hagen. Providing anecdotal evidence to the “Testosterone does not help your starts” theory, Jessica Hadler grabbed the early lead over Jeremy Dewall, while Hagen fought through the roost towards the front. By the end of lap two, he was in the lead and pulling away to victory. Hadler, who would later win the Women’s class, was a solid second over Hillclimb star Aaron Prebe, Jimmy Heidebrink, and Conner Cunningham.

With only a race between, Hagen went to the line for the 14-24 C moto, where he again quickly made his way to the front on his Berms and Blacktop supported Yamaha, this time finishing in front of Cunningham, Prebe, Anthony Suarez, and Tyler Sandback. The Open C moto was a few races later, where he completed the three-class sweep.

The smaller bikes had to work that much harder in the mud, but that didn’t seem to lessen the turn-out of the 85cc classes. In Supermini 12-15, third generation district rider, Devin Donaho, pulled the holeshot with his Pat’s Auto Collision/GPS racing YZ85, to keep clean early. Jacob Martin thumped into the lead by the end of lap one and pulled away for the win. Donaho stayed solidly in second, followed by Clare, Iowa’s Daniel Fliehe, Chase Becker, and William Dorow.

No one else was able to win three classes, but several riders did the double. Garret Strege won 65cc 7-9 and 65cc 7-11, Shane Rhode topped Schoolboy 12-16 and 125 12+, Joe Perron took 250 A and Open A honors, Andrew Rutledge won 250 B and 14-24 B, and Robert Kohl sloshed to wins in 25+ A and 30+ A.

The series is supported by sponsors Ziegler Cat, Cities Edge Sports, Delano Sports Center, Hitching Post Motorsports, and Waconia Powersports The next round is May 17, back at Elko, where hopefully, the wet day/dry day ratio will begin to even itself out.

Jessica Hansen was still getting airborne in the mud, on her way to second in the Women’s class.

All the way from South Dakota, Jeffery Schreurs won 40+ B and was second in 45+.
